Our
Story The California Lithuanian Golf Club (C.L.G.C.) had humble beginnings with a foursome of golfers in the summer of 1983. Paul Aras, Albinas Markevicius, Victor Plukas and Laimas Venckus would play every Friday morning. As word got out membership began to grow. The members decided to elect Jurgis Petkus as the first president of the California Lithuanian Golf Club. The semblances of a club began to blossom. After a year of golf on Fridays, the members convened for the second annual meeting and Vincas Bernota was passed the baton as president of the California Lithuanian Golf Club. Vincas, being a young man and knowing that more Lithuanians played golf than just retirees and those with the luxury of time he, decided to hold a tournament on a weekend. Twenty golfers showed up in the Valley to play Encino Golf Course. The club, developing its base of hard-core players, decided to expand its golf tournaments to include two-three day events and traveling outside of LA. A small team was put together to attend the annual mid-west Salfas Golf Tournament in Chicago. Jonas Talandis, then a resident of Chicago, admired a C.L.G.C. hat. The next thing we knew, Jonas moved to California and has become one of our oldest and dedicated members. The Club has a rich history of playing many courses in many different parts of the west that include Del Mar, Tehachapi Bajamar Mexico, Morro Bay, Arpoador Beach and Palm Springs. Robert Paskus hosted a weekend tournament at Pala Mesa Resort in San Diego County. A three-day outing followed at the San Vicente Resort in Ramona,California. Paul Aras was elected president followed by Victor Plukas. Then Arunas Barkus took over the organization with a zeal that lasted many years. Jurgis Joga then took the reins for three years. He initiated the club golf shirts with logo, which were designed via a contest at the Lithuanian Saturday school. Finally, our current leader, Larry Kaveckas who has successfully kept our Lithuanian sports organization active, scheduling tournaments the last couple of years. In the new millennium there is a new spirit rising with in the club. Larry, who continues to be President, is receiving help from Rita Dicius-Tumas who has been elected as Tournament Director and is currently locking down golf courses to play for the coming year. Commitment and energy of some of the newer members mixed with the experience of our hardcore members the C.L.G.C will continue to prosper allowing Lithuanian golfers to meet, socialize and conquer golf courses together.
